I’m New Here

Gil Scott-Heron

Here’s an excellent interview with Gil Scott-Heron from the daily swarm. Gil has just released one of my favorite records of 2010 on XL Recordings -“I’m New Here” and his amazing back catalog includes songs such as ‘The Revolution Will Not Be Televised’, ‘Winter in America’, ‘Lady Day and John Coltrane’ and ‘Whitey on the Moon’. All of Gil’s work is highly recommended. Click

Know Your History!

I’m a little taken aback that someone would consider independent artists starting their own labels a novel act, especially in this era of disintegrating major labels and general music-industry confusion.

How could you write or run this piece without a single mention of Dischord or Merge, K or 2 Tone, Teenbeat or Crass, SST or Bella Union, to name just a few?

Who’s Afraid of the “Howling Wolf?”

Outstanding article about the history of tuning, particularly equal temperament, and some recent agitations against it.

As tuning activist Kyle Gann says on his Web site, “Playing Bach’s Well-Tempered Clavier in today’s equal temperament is like exhibiting Rembrandt paintings with wax paper taped over them.”

Whoa — if there’s a way to make the “48” sound even better, I’m not sure I want to know about it. Might be enough to turn me into some drooling victim out of Infinite Jest.

Hard Day’s Night of the Soul?

To counter the horrid most recent revelations and scandal — which are obviously of infinitely greater import — a couple of surreal but somehow comforting, to me at least, Papal announcements.

More Biking

Following on Steve’s post, I was pleased to discover, according to this post and the picture below, that back in the day bikes were often the SUV of choice

And apparently for some — the objections of Shopfloor.org and Steve LaTourette notwithstanding — they still are.
